Hm… Dedicated, certainly, though that applies to both factions, I know. But there is a sort of unity in Zenites that seems to be lacking in Meri. I think it is why the Oracle ended up ours in both cases. We are a bit better at working together. Largely speaking, at least.
[ Bondrewd’s interest is good. If he had been more reticent, then Sebastian would have just moved onto his next person, but he has little doubts that Bondrewd would be the best option. His skill and lack of, well, ethics were what Sebastian needed. It’s also why he’s generous, as far as deals go. ]
You may name your price first, and then we can get to negotiations properly.
Should this be a personal favor, it would need to be within your power to procure.
[ Bondrewd will not pretend to know all that Sebastian is capable of, either. A demon is beyond him, a curiosity he is beginning to puzzle through — their mutual curiosity an insurmountable feat of engineering that could, and would, prove dangerous.
So, he thinks. ] In the event of a true death from which I cannot come back — I would like it very much if you would disseminate all of my knowledge and findings to all Shardbearers - regardless of Harmonized or Unharmonized status, without hiding or redacting anything. I will have notes hidden that someone as clever as you will undoubtedly find.
[ Most important to him is not his longevity, but that nothing is lost with him. Ever. ]
Unless you are asking on behalf of someone else, in which — I would ask for something else.
[ Bondrewd’s request is a surprise, but really only because Sebastian had been sort of expecting the worst for himself (at least in the short term). Considering Bondrewd’s interests, he was half expecting the man to request to be able to do a “thorough” examination of his form, and as such, to end up with his first dissipation. It’s a price he was perfectly willing to pay. The actual request is… charming, in a way. ]
It is a personal favor, yes, so there is no need to worry about that. Pardon my surprise— [ Since Bondrewd would have felt it, of course ] It is a benevolent request. That is not usually the sort of thing I am asked, to be honest.
[ He laughs, since while it’s true, he’s also teasing a little bit. ]
I accept. I will share your works if you pass. Would you also like for me to do so if you simple disappear, as Shard-Bearers sometimes do?
[ Normally he would just leave the terms as is, but whether for his own whims or wanting the deal to be a bit more “fair” in his own valuation, he offers all the same. ]
[ There might be, in someone else, a peal of laughter that the suggestion that Bondrewd's request is 'benevolent'. In him, there is simply a knowing thrum of movement. Neither altruistic, nor cruel, is his request. It is driven purely by the desire to ensure that even if he does not survive, progress will. ]
Yes, please. Should I Shatter, disappear, or become invalidated in a way that means I cannot continue on in Kenos — I believe that covers all potential fates.
All that I will ask shared with the Shardbearers will be written down, addressed directly to you, Mister Michaelis. You are not to destroy my records, redact anything within them, or change the wording. No one but you is allowed to handle, destroy, change or redact anyting, either. If you choose to deliver it using that lovely voice of yours, it is to be verbatim. And it will be delivered immediately following my end, at the very moment that you locate it. [ sorry about ur communion sir ] You enjoy perfection, I am asking you to be the final instrument of my own eternal acuity.
[ And therein, is the lack of benevolence. The precision he intends to have succeed him. For even if the information is helpful OR ruinous, he intends Sebastian to deliver it all, with no ability to escape the purity of Bondrewd's intention. ]
Ah, needless to say — anything about you or your nature is not included in this record. I have treated our examination of your being as a separate agreement between us, to sate our own curiosities.
Now, the finality of such things aside, I have no intention of simply conceding to a potential future. I am ready to make good on listening to my half of this bargain. What would you like me to do for you?
[ At the very least, it makes Sebastian laugh. It’s gentle and amused, because while he still sees it as largely benevolent, that’s mostly from his own point of view. With these strictly defined criteria, he can see how Bondrewd’s research could present issues, but he also just thought they would largely be for others. Sebastian’s longevity comes in handy with things like this. If Bondrewd creates Pandora’s box and asks him to open it, then naturally he had no problem with that. Knowledge is powerful, and mortals were not as good at wielding it as they thought. ]
I accept the terms. Whatever your research discovers, it shall be known. You have my oath in this, so long as I too am able to carry it out.
[ And of course, demon that he is, he half hopes that it is something ruinous… But that’s something to find out much later. ]
[ For now, he finally gets to his area of interest. While Sebastian doesn’t straightforwardly explain why the topic would be one that he’s willing to bargain for, it’s also not terribly hard to guess for anyone that had paid attention in the roots of the Tree of Life. Surely, that’s also why secrecy was so important to him. ]
I need a tutor for surgery. Specifically, those that focus around the nervous system, as I would like to transplant an eye. I can do my reading, but in such delicate procedures, I believe the practical experience will be necessary.
[ And considering Bondrewd’s clear skill with the “subjects” they had found in Highstorm… Who could be better, really? ]
It will need to combine a bit of this world’s magic, I believe, so we may also be doing some innovation, if that is fine with you. However, I have seen some in Kowloon who have replaced a lost eye with something mechanical, magical, or both, which is how I know that it is at least possible. Merely delicate and difficult, I imagine… Ah, and on that note, if you would not mind giving me a bit of direction on the calculations that go into anesthesiology, that would also be helpful. Calculating the correct dosages I shall need will simply go more quickly with a bit of know-how behind it.
My, my. I am grateful that you've chosen me to be your tutor in this regard, as I have been brushing up on my own medical skills at the Academy for some time now. It does beg the question — why not attend classes there, Mister Michaelis?
[ There is the sense that the answer won't matter to him, and that he's asking for his curiosities' sake. To allow Bondrewd to instruct him means staying off the radar, as the Sovereign of Dawn has worked to be all this time. Putting one's name on the roster of students could lead to a paper trail, in his opinion. Having dealt with black markets, clandestine deals and more in his lifetime — selling Artifacts, drugs and intel in exchange for funding, supplies and personnel-subjects — even Bondrewd knows the benefit in moving subtly and methodically. ]
And, simply for clarification: is the surgical knowledge that you seek for a human, or an animal? I have experience with both. They do not differ too drastically from one another, but the body of a human will exhibit a greater degree of complexity than that of an animal. It will also help me organize and define the extent of your lessons. Some of the tools that you produced for me also need updating, and further variety.
The Academy does not have the level of secrecy I require. My chosen tutor may talk, or in the worst case, have no choice in the matter. Or merely to be observed attending is more attention than I desire.
[ Sebastian mulls it over with a thoughtful noise for a moment. He’s still not inclined to get into the exact details of his plan, since the less known they were, the better. He hadn’t even told Silco his precise idea for the eye, but Silco trusted him enough to at least understand that it was a personal vendetta. So long as it wasn’t used against him personally, Silco didn’t mind. ]
They are both, technically.
[ At the very least, he decides that revealing the target is acceptable. He’d rather not, but it would have come up eventually regardless, considering formulating the drug to disable her would necessitate it. Though, as he speaks, that disquiet dark of Sebastian’s Communion shifts. It’s not threatening and wild as it had been in the Tree, but smooth, formless velvet. It’s a gentle hand on the shoulder, a warm whisper in the ear—it’s the cruel, wicked calculation of a devil. ]
It is restitution, Mr. Bondrewd. I stole Hayame’s eye nearly a year ago and a world away. Now I shall give her one back.
[ an affirming rumble, from deep within his mind. ]
Yes, yes. [ sou sou, is what he actually says. ] I understand completely. While I enjoyed a certain degree of notoriety in my former world, there are a great number of merits to returning to my roots and my youth, before I became a White Whistle. Anonymity serves the intellectual process.
[ Which is why he keeps his head down and his approach exceptionally neutral, across the board. Keeping to himself, proving helpful and frighteningly affable, and partnering with like-minded people are many ways he ensures his work can continue safely, securely and unstoppably for the moment. And Sebastian's self — the wicked, dark thing that coils around Bondrewd's mind? It merits an immediate look.
There is the sense, that Sebastian's formlessness and age are not the first Abyss that Bondrewd has willingly, enthusiastically looked into. ]
— the adorable Miss Hayame, she is quite the firebrand. It is good that you have informed me, it will make your lessons that much more effective. We will go over all the general information associated with surgery, surgical hygiene for yourself and her, human and equine anatomy and their co-mingled needs. Normally, I would also ask you to learn the core sciences prior to addressing the particular topic of the brain, spine and neurological system, then the anesthesiologic practice and applicability — and this would take years, mind you — but.
You have the potential to be my brightest student. I think we turn you into a neurosurgeon in a matter of... oh, a month. Maybe two, to ensure it. We'll find you plenty of humans and beasts to work on. I will even engineer you some, as part of your curriculum.
[ Sebastian is openly pleased across the line of Communion, though it’s sharp. It’s not directed at Bondrewd, of course—he’s truly quite happy that the man has agreed to be his tutor—but it’s an edge that’s normally well hidden. Only Set and Silco truly know the kind of precise, vicious cruelty that Sebastian can wield. Even removing Hayame’s eye was only partially that. Giving one back was much more in line with a demon’s cruelty than the logical, brutal efficiency of removing an archer’s eye. And now, Bondrewd knew as well.
It has him relaxing. Or, more accurately, unmasking himself in part. His speech is no less polite and formal, but it’s cooler and more confident. A predator no longer playing at being prey, perhaps. ]
Two months is about what I had guessed as well. Luckily, I am a quick study and not prone to failings of memory. You shall only have to instruct me once.
[ It’s arrogant, but also factual. A not insignificant part of why Sebastian is so clever is thanks to his perfect memory. Even among his kind, it’s not the most common trait. ]
I at least have a bit of a head start when it comes to biological and chemical processes. My side work will serve this personal matter well, apparently. [ thanks for being insane, silco! ] Of course, should you have particular recommendations for study material, I am happy to take them. My understanding has improved markedly since Mr. Silco became my employer, but I am still playing catch up, so to speak. There are many, many innovations that came in the years after 1889, as it turns out.
I will be able to provide you with materials from the Academy — textbooks, research from their public records and any notes I take during my own attendance, for your study. My association with the Academy will be beneficial to you, as I have already promoted myself primarily as a researcher and medical professional among both Meridian and Zenith.
[ He's so affable and sincere, it might be hard for some people to understand the true depravity of his vision. While he speaks of how he aids others, and provides an essential, neutral presence among the Shard-bearers, under the surface he engages the world without mercy, nor ethical consideration. Case in point, using his knowledge and ability to instruct a demon who has just announced he wishes to ( essentially! ) torment another Shard-bearer.
Well, honestly. If Sebastian does it, it means that Bondrewd's teachings are effective and he can rest assured of the dissemination of information. ]
I do not believe I know the innovations of your world, although our knowledge bases seem to be similar. To even know what neurosurgery is means we must share some commonalities. I would like to know exactly what you know about medical theory and practice, so I can assess for overlap and effective instruction. The year you speak of is unfamiliar to me, but I also lived in the Abyss — time might as well have been nonexistent there. The Sea of Corpses was permanently dark, after all.
Then it seems I shall be delightfully busy in coming weeks. I give my thanks in advance for all of the reading material, as I am always looking for more, honestly. Since I do not require sleep, I spend idle hours with reading and research.
[ And though he’s occupied himself with biochemistry since Silco had wanted him to make Shimmer, he’s also getting towards the end of what materials is easily available within Kenos. So Bondrewd’s more specific selections as well as material that may not be available within the Tomes or Springstar’s libraries is something Sebastian genuinely appreciates.
It’s also deeply satisfying to know that he had made the correct choice in asking Bondrewd. Besides his clear technical skill in the area (which was Sebastian’s primary motivation), it seems he’ll be just as valuable of a resource for the academic. How pleasing. ]
I can go into great detail now about what I know, should you wish. We can also have the conversation in person if you prefer. [ He laughs pleasantly, since, well— ] Why, over that dinner I plan to make for you, perhaps? I fear it may be a long conversation, after all.
Oh, it is my pleasure. My Umbra Hands were often smitten with the knowledge that we discovered and the future we worked towards at the Ido Front. Many of them arrived as bounty hunters and assassins, eager to take my head, and remained with me once they saw the work we were doing there.
[ To be able to instruct an avid pupil, no matter what they are or what they will do with the knowledge, is a thing that he — it isn't that Bondrewd feels strongly for it, or even feels much of anything at all, but that the natural direction of his focus and personality(?) are fixated upon progress. Sebastian, who wishes to learn, is a man looking to join that push for progress — even if it is for himself.
That is all Bondrewd cares for, really. Helping his fellow Shardbearers get where they need, while he also works for the whole of them, is his desire. ]
You know, I think this marvelous dinner you are planning will be the perfect time to wile away the hours. I was finally able to calculate my kilocalories, by the way — as I am now, I require [ insert arbitrary amount for a nearly 7ft tall humanoid? here. ] I will bring some preliminary materials, and my notes to devise a proper curriculum for you. I have not taught since — oh, since my daughter passed, honestly.
[ Which was months ago by now, but he speaks of it like a distant thing he is long over. ]
[ Sebastian breathes out a little laugh at just where Bondrewd’s staff came from, but it’s only lightly surprised. It’s merely the fact that someone else had used such a method. The little staff of the Phantomhive manor came about in such a similar way, but it felt like a rather fortunate set of circumstances to him. So, it’s a bit pleasing to hear Bondrewd had the same, though he doesn’t speak to it. There’s no need, in his opinion. It’s a shared curiosity, but the servants of the Phantomhive manor were a matter of the past. ]
Then you of course have my thanks. I shall prepare something delightful and be certain there is room at the table for work.
[ How improper a setup! But despite any appearance otherwise, he is relaxing in his strict Victorian manners at this point. Somewhat. ]
Prushka, was it? I am sorry to hear that she passed. With how you spoke of her before, I had assumed… Well. [ Not that she was alive, necessarily, as Zenith’s claims didn’t quite allow for that, but. ] Was she your protégé as well?
Besides seeing the work the Ido Front was undertaking, it certainly didn't hurt to introduce the individuals and groups hunting him for the price on his head to Zoaholic, either. Once in its proximity, humans tended to prove rather weak-willed and susceptible to it, and thus primed for his consciousness to join with theirs. But, he does not have Zoaholic. ( Yet. ) Thus, no ability to do the same thing, without convincing someone thoroughly to his way. ]
My daughter and protégé, yes. She often helped me with my work. Not all of it, mind you — but, matters I could entrust her with. She was the most resolute soul, impossible to break the will of, and it was her love that allowed me to transcend all limits. Love was truly the answer to some of my greatest work.
[ this is going to be funny to see sebastian work mentally through ]
[ This response is… not what Sebastian expected at all. However one feels the Math Lady Meme™ through Communion, that is what’s going on here. ]
…Forgive me.
[ He does at least know that he is transmitting that feeling, whatever it is, so he does apologize. ]
It is merely a bit of a surprise to hear. When I have met those dedicated to scientific pursuits and especially with your vigor, they tend to be more muted sorts. But admittedly, love is the human emotion I understand the least.
Oh, but it is the most invigorating of emotions! Should you wish to learn to emulate love as you do biological function, it might become a wonderful advantage for you to hold. No one would expect a demon capable of comprehending love, even on an intellectual level, effectively enough to utilize it.
Your mind is so adorable, Mister Michaelis.
[ He has zero issues with considering making Sebastian more dangerous. Though, he does reasonable expect that 'love' is utterly incompatible with his nature, and might be a deeply difficult thing. That Sebastian's brain is doing the [???????????] equivalent is charming to him. ]
Aah, it was the love of my daughter, and perhaps all the children I knew, that allowed me to uncover the manner in which I might transcend the grasp of the Abyss's curse — the force that caused mental and physical anguish, thus entrapping those who delved too deep. To be loved, was to be able to escape the Curse and transform it into a Blessing.
[ …There he goes again, calling him adorable, and over something Sebastian would consider decidedly not adorable. Or at least that would be his understanding with any other person. Bondrewd is correct that it would give him an advantage, and Sebastian even has an argument on his tongue that he can emulate the motions of it well enough, but… No, he decides to let it go. Lest he be called adorable again, maybe.
…Not that the other half of this conversation is any less perplexing, though. ]
…This Abyss of yours is truly a strange place. When you first told me of it, I was distinctly reminded of a particular author’s depiction of Hell, but the more you speak of it…
[ AND EVERYTHING ELSE? ]
No, it is somehow far stranger. Yet, it still seems apt, somehow, what with talk of curses and blessings. From what you have said, I have a sense enough of what makes a curse, but then what would a blessing be?
